Project Description

Both Vineyard

Handcrafted wines from Oxfordshire’s oldest vineyard

Bothy Vineyard continues an ancient tradition of wine making in the Vale of the White Horse dating back at least to medieval times. Tending and picking is done by hand and the wine is made with minimal intervention. The excellent micro-climate, warm sandy soils, long ripening season and mature vines produce wines of consistent depth and quality which have won many awards.

In 1978 Perle, Ortega, Huxelerebe and Findling were planted at the vineyard, on three acres of land. As is usual in English vineyards these were all German crosses which performed well in our climate. The grapes were vinified and blended in our own winery to produce a variety of dry and off-dry white wines in a distinctly English style. There is more information on our grapes and our wines.

In 2007 Sian and Richard Liwicki introduced new grape varieties which enabled a wider range of styles to be produced while maintaining the same exacting quality – Bacchus, Regent, Rondo and Dornfelder. Bothy wines now include a rosé, sparkling and a red – but the aromatic, dry whites remain the backbone of our business.
